SU4QE Progress in LAs

Local Association Secretaries and senior EIS staff recently had a two day meeting, with SU4QE at the top of the agenda. 

The local SU4QE campaign successes and challenges were shared. The table below outlines many of these wins.

 

LA 1

1. Improvements to incident recording & reporting system, including moving it online.

2. Acknowledgement that feedback to teachers after incidents is poor.

3. More headteacher training.

 

Positive impact felt already – teachers better informed.

 

LA 2

 

  1. Violence & Aggression Working Group – senior staff buy-in.

  2. Instant reporting (direct submission) system – via QR Code. Lanyards, posters and stickers.

  3. EIS Engagement with corporate local authority H&S – identified barriers.

  4. Rewriting V&A policy – adding education aspects, using EIS definitions, pupil on teacher, parent/carer on teacher etc.

  5. Followed up “competent persons” for risk assessments – reinforced employer responsibility for RAs.

  6. Established H&S Committees in every establishment – recruited EIS H&S Reps and helping to embed them.

  7. Engaged with elected councillors – corporate message against V&A.

  8. Reviewing and promoting positive behaviour policies.

  9. Reviewing WTAs. More PSAs for Home Economics teachers. 

 

LA 3

  1. Corporate policy refreshed gave an opportunity for change.

  2. Formed a cross-party working group for “working spaces”.

  3. Training on reporting V&A incidents.

  4. Education & Corporate reporting procedures are different but clarified by EIS.

  5. WTA training.

  6. Added tackling bureaucracy to LNCT agendas.

  7. LA survey – member happiness and challenges.

  8. Workload – acknowledgement that it is affected by the poor state of estate and broken resources.

  9. Push to meet reps/branches – identifying organic leaders.

 

LA 4

  1. Reviewed and streamlined V&A reporting system. Referrals reviewed monthly – down to school level.

  2. Appointed more Educational Psychologists.

  3. V&A local survey – to keep up the pressure.

  4. ASN – unmet ASN is driving pupil behaviour and recognition that ASN is a problem in the LA.

  5. ASN Audit found unequal provision of specialist support. Stigma and logistics identified regarding specialist units.

  6. Multi-level classes identified as an issue.

 

LA 5

  1. Had begun to survey V&A some time ago – and formed a Short Life Working Group, which is now a standing oversight committee: CLPL & mainstreaming.

  2. CLPL – for DHT/HTs to deal with incidents.

  3. Reporting reviewed and improved – using an App. Gatekeeping identified as an issue.

  4. ASN Review also been carried out – recommendations to be published.

  5. Collegiality Improvement Plan – rebuilding relationships by delivering collegiality training in schools, with HTs and EIS reps.
