Colleagues
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member for all that they have done over these past months in supporting and nurturing children and young people, adult learners, families and communities. The work that you do as teachers and lecturers is immensely valuable to individuals, communities and society as a whole- your worth as professionals cannot be overestimated.
Whilst this is understood by many, it is less well grasped and recognised by employers and government, unfortunately.
Many of you have also therefore been involved in pay campaigns- so far across the school and university sectors in particular- taking part in ballots and in strike action, including picketing and rallies. For most, this is entirely new territory but the strength of your collective resolve and determination has been inspirational.
Campaigning for fair pay as a component of proper funding of Education at all levels, at the same time as maintaining your day jobs, takes even more energy than in a normal academic year. Even without such campaigning, energy levels will be depleted.
I know that you will all very much be looking longingly to the festive break, now clear on the horizon, and towards some much needed breathing space, and much-deserved rest and relaxation.
All good wishes for the festive season and I look forward to working with you in the New Year, further towards ‘the advancement of teachers and the promotion of sound learning’- our motto as sound as we come towards the end of 2022 as it was in 1847 when it was first penned.
All the very best
Andrea Bradley, General Secretary

As highlighted last week, a meeting of the SNCT Extended Joint Chair took place yesterday. As had previously been signalled by Scottish Government when calling the meeting, no new offer was brought to the table by SG/COSLA. The EIS had nonetheless agreed to attend the meeting with a view to exploring potential ways forward.
Minimal headway was made at yesterday’s meeting in this regard. The EIS reasserted our position regarding the sub-standard quality of the last offer; the need for a new, credible and non-differentiated offer; rejection of the One Workforce agenda; and insistence on respectful adherence to sectoral collective bargaining going forward.
We have agreed to leave all channels of communication open ahead of the 10th and 11th January strike days, which, as things stand, will go ahead.
|
Please note the change to the date for the national demonstration in Glasgow to Saturday 11th March, as part of the #PayAttention campaign. This is due to policing issues.

|
Organising a branch meeting is a great way to bring EIS members together where they can discuss the pay campaign and other issues. If you would like your local EIS organiser to attend your meeting, then please contact your LA Secretary.
Your Christmas Campaign Party packs would add a bit of festive spirit to branch campaigning ahead of the holidays. Don’t forget to post your photos using #PayAttention.

Fighting for the Future of Further Education Campaign
|
The EIS-FELA launched its multi-themed Fighting for the Future of Further Education campaign on Wednesday 16th November.
With the Scottish Government embarking on work to 'reform' the FE sector and with a stated ambition of seeing closer links between Further and Higher Education, the timing of this campaign could not be more pressing. The EIS-FELA is determined to see an FE sector where colleges are focused on delivering for the communities that they serve and with a lecturing workforce that is truly valued for its professionalism.
As part of the campaign launch, all EIS-FELA members are being asked to pledge their support behind the six demands of the Fighting for the Future of Further Education campaign. Please check your emails for a link to pledge support and contact your Branch Secretary if you have not received an email with a link.

FELA Pay Negotiations 2022/23
|
A 2% pay offer form the Employers' side of the NJNC, was summarily rejected by the EIS-FELA national negotiators on Thursday 24th November. It has taken several meetings of the NJNC, following submission of the £5000 flat rated claim in August, to see an offer being made form the Employers' side. Following the rejection of the 2%, it was made clear to the Employers' side that they must return with a vastly improved offer at a further meeting of the NJNC to take place in December.
