Today, Scotland is the first country in the world to commit to a national rollout of LGBT Inclusive Education. But it was only just over 20 years ago that a piece of public sector legislation prohibited the teaching of LGBT lives and relationships in schools.
So many of Scotland’s teachers and students lived through the devastating effects of Section 2A (known as Section 28 in England and Wales). What can we learn from their stories of the past, to help us take LGBT Inclusive Education forward in the present?

LGBT History Month Event 2025: Stories of Section 28/2A Film Night, Teaching Resource Launch and Social.
Friday 21st February 2025 | 6-9pm | Glasgow (venue TBC)
Join the EIS during LGBT+ History Month 2025 for an evening of story sharing and socialising. This event aims to celebrate the launch of a new Section 28/2A Teaching Resource in collaboration with the TIE Campaign, display a collection of EIS members’ stories, and share a series of short learning films capturing the voices of activists and teachers about the impacts of Section S28/2A, the campaign for its repeal in Scotland, and the importance of understanding the past to build a more inclusive and equitable present and future.
This event will also include food, refreshments, and a social.
All EIS members are welcome to this event.
Places are limited with priority being given to those belonging to an EIS Equality Network so please note your interest in attending now, via our online booking form.
The EIS is still gathering members’ Stories of Section 28/2A until January 31st.
We shall be displaying some of these at February’s LGBT History Month event as part of a wider display around Section 28/2A.
