National Roll-Out begins…

September 2021 will see the national roll-out of GTCS registration for college lecturers across Scotland.  This brings to fruition a long-held EIS-FELA ambition and one which we fought for as part of the May and November NJNC Agreements.

Lecturers holding a TQFE or recognised Primary or Secondary teaching qualification will be the first to register in September 2021, with others following in the spring of 2022.

What do you need to do if you are eligible to register?

Eligible lecturers will receive an email from GTCS, inviting them to register and explaining the process.  You do not need to do anything until then.

What if I am eligible to register and don’t receive an email?

If you have not received an email in early September and are eligible to register, then check your junk and spam email folders. It is also worthwhile contacting your HR Department to ensure that they have the correct email address for you and that there are no errors in the spelling of the email address which GTCS has for you. If this does not resolve the issue, then contact the relevant person in the college HR Department or your Branch Secretary who will be able to help.

What documents do I need to register?

You will need a copy of your teaching qualification. If you can’t find it, check with your college HR Department in the first instance as they may hold a copy. If they don’t, then you should contact your university provider for confirmation of the award. The GTCS will accept an email from them confirming that you have successfully completed the qualification. For those who completed the TQFE in sessions 2019/20 and 2020/21, you will only have an electronic certificate as a result of COVID restrictions and this is fine.

You will also need an updated PVG. This is required by law and costs £18. Once you submit your online application to GTCS, you will receive an email from Disclosure Scotland which must be actioned within 7 days.

How much will registration cost?

Lecturers contacted to register in August 2021 will pay a reduced part-year fee of £43. The GTCS annual registration fee is £65 and this is the standard fee for all registrants. 

All lecturers registering will revert to payment of the standard annual registration fee of £65 from April 2022.

What if I don’t hold a TQFE at present?

If you don’t currently hold a TQFE, don’t worry! You will be in the second tranche of registration which is due to take place from April 2022. Work is ongoing to develop routes to registration and more information will be coming out on this in the months to come. 

Am I eligible to register in September 2021 if I am qualified outwith Scotland, or hold a Higher Education or alternative teaching qualification?

You will not be eligible to register in September but you will form part of the second tranche of registration, due to start in April 2022.  Work is ongoing within GTCS to consider and identify validated routes to registration. Alternative qualifications will be assessed as part of this process.

I used to be registered with GTCS but have allowed my registration to lapse.  What should I do?

Don’t worry. You do not need to do anything different from other college lecturers.
