The University Lecturers' Association (EIS-ULA) is a self-governing association within the EIS and is constitutionally autonomous in all matters relating to Scottish Universities and equivalent institutions.
All members are full members of the EIS and enjoy all the same benefits. In addition, new ULA members are entitled to free membership for the first 3 months. A recent change introduced at the EIS AGM in June 2018 means that PhD students in HEIs who are employed to teach (other than on a full-time contract) in the same educational institute are also entitled to free membership. The EIS-ULA has its own independent policy-making structure.
Policies on educational issues relating to higher education in Scotland, including crucially the salaries and conditions of lecturers and related staff, are formulated by members of the EIS-ULA themselves through the Annual Conference and Executive Committee.
The EIS-ULA has members in eighteen of Scotland’s nineteen Higher Education Institutions. The EIS-ULA sister association for further education EIS-FELA is the recognised academic trade union in all of the UHI partner colleges.
EIS-ULA is serviced by the Further and Higher Education Section of the Organisation Department at EIS Headquarters. Support for members in colleges is provided by the branch secretary in the university or higher education institution and EIS Headquarters.
The EIS-ULA Executive Committee consists of up to 28 members. This includes 3 Office Bearers; President, Vice President and Ex President. The President takes the Chair at all meetings of the EIS-ULA Executive Committee. The national Conference is held annually in March.

The EIS has agreements with three specialist organisations; The British Association of Occupational Therapists, The Royal College of Midwives Scottish Board, and the Royal College of Nursing.
Royal College of Nursing (RCN):
The two organisations (EIS & RCN) have taken note of the development of courses within Higher Education which involve the recruitment to universities of members of the Royal College of Nursing as academic and academic-related staff. They have agreed a joint membership scheme, whereby the two organisations will cooperate fully in the interests of those members of staff and facilitate membership of both organisations.

The Royal College of Midwives Scottish Board (RCM):
The two organisations (EIS & RCM) have taken note of the development of courses within Higher Education which involve the recruitment of members of the Royal College of Midwives Scottish Board as academic and academic-related staff. They have agreed a dual membership scheme, whereby the two organisations will cooperate fully in the interests of members and facilitate membership of both organisations.
UNISON / British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT):
UNISON has an agreement with the British Association of Occupational Therapists to provide BAOT members with Trade Union Services and membership of Unison. Certain members of UNISON / BOAT are employed as teachers of Occupational Therapy.
The purpose of this agreement is for a Joint Membership Scheme with EIS whereby UNISON and EIS will cooperate fully in the interests of those members of UNISON / BAOT who are teachers of occupational therapy in institutions where EIS is recognised for negotiating purposes. Such members of the UNISON / BAOT will hold joint membership with EIS where appropriate.

National Officer Deborah Shepherd is the lead officer with responsibility for individual member casework for Higher Education. She will ensure that higher education members receive timeous support for sensitive and often time consuming cases.
However, members are reminded that in the first instance a member with a difficulty should seek out and consult with the branch secretary and/or branch convener who will advise on the best course of action to take. In most cases full-time officer support will not be needed until local procedures have been exhausted.
If and when officer support is needed it must only be requested by the branch secretary and/or convener contacting the relevant National Officer.
If the matter is one of a national (pay and/or conditions) or institutional (policy/procedure) or individual (discipline/grievance) nature it should be sought from Deborah Shepherd.
Members must not contact the National Officers directly as this leads to frustrations not only for themselves but branch officers also who are not always informed that they have done so.
Branch officers must remain the main contact between the full-time officers and the members in each Higher Education Institution if the branch structure is to work effectively and the collective strength maintained.
