Following on from the publication of the ‘Face Up to Child Poverty’ booklet earlier in the session, the Equality Department has prepared a package of resources to assist EIS members in schools and colleges in keeping the issue of child poverty to the fore at establishment level.

The package of resources contains information relating to the causes and details some of the problems that arise in classrooms as a consequence of poverty.

It advises members of possible practical steps they may wish to take when they become aware of issues related to the impact of socio-economic deprivation on the experiences of children and young people in school.

Materials can be used separately or together as the focus of EIS branch meetings, CPD sessions or to inform discussions with SMT on the issue.

Included in the pack are:

School Costs is a Short EIS/CPAG sponsored film, directed by Iain Henderson, winner of BAFTA Scotland New Talent Award 2015, highlighting the struggle of families on low income to meet the costs associated with their children attending school.

Message from Larry Flanagan

The fact that poverty now affects such a large, and growing, section of society should shame those in government and elsewhere who continue to push the damaging and divisive austerity-above-all agenda.

Schools and colleges cannot eradicate the poverty which exists in our society; nor can they fully mitigate the impact that poverty has on our young people.

Those in public life who seek to highlight the inequalities created by poverty, would do well to understand that to end the negative impact of poverty on educational attainment, we need to address the existence of poverty itself. 

Having said that, however, we should recognise that schools, colleges and teaching professionals, can and do make a difference in the lives of individuals, of groups of children, and even on whole cohorts.

The poverty-proofing measures outlined in this pack can assist teaching professionals in trying to mitigate as far as possible, the impact of low income on young people’s educational experience.
